About glassybaby
glassybaby was born to give hope: through the beauty of hand-crafted glass, and the generous donations of the glassybaby community, this company lights up little acts of kindness that help people, animals, and the planet, heal.
Lee Rhodes is a three-time cancer survivor and founder of glassybaby, a mission-driven glass votive company based in Seattle, WA. Founded in Lees garage, and still made in America, glassybaby is on track to become a $30 million-dollar-a-year-business, giving back $1 million annually and over $14 million to date to over 250 non profits.
The company has five brick-and-mortar stores and a thriving online store at www.glassybaby.com. A team of 70 glassblowers produce about 800 glassybaby daily, seven days a week, from the companys Seattle and Montana-based glassblowing hot shops.
The mission is to spread kindness and help people heal. Our votives are designed to do just that, and the market has shown great enthusiasm for the products we sell, where each one has a name and tells a special and unique story that strikes a personal connection. Most companies might find giving 22% of profit away to be a bad business strategy. We lean into this; giving is our baseline metric, and the business decisions we make support the giving goals we set. And those goals are centered around helping communities around the country. As a result, over 20 years, our company has grown from operating out of Lees garage to being on target to reach $30 million in revenue this year.
Our trademark triskelion with three spirals is one of the oldest Celtic symbols. At glassybaby, the three branches form our company tree: giving, craft, and family. Our growth has come from a focus on measuring our progress against these three pillars of our brand.
Lee and glassybaby have been featured on The Martha Stewart Show, Kathy Lee & Hoda on TODAY, CBS MoneyWatch, and Bloomberg News. glassybaby has received numerous accolades from media outlets including The New York Times, Huffington Post and Town & Country Magazine. In 2011, Lee was named Entrepreneur of the Year by Entrepreneur Magazine, the first woman to receive the honor. Lee also received the Woman of Valor Award from Vice President Biden in 2015.
What really counts to us is the feedback we receive from our giving partners:
Words cannot describe the immense gratitude I have for each of you and your incredibly generous gift. Because of you, children with cancer and their families can maintain a sense of normalcy and hope. Thank you for embodying kindness in everything and sharing the Pinky Swear story.
Erica Campbell, Executive Director, Pinky Swear Foundation
GVLT is incredibly grateful for this transformational commitment from the glassybaby foundation to help us dramatically accelerate our land conservation efforts in Park County, MT. We approached the glassybaby foundation with an urgent funding need and they quickly responded to this opportunity with generosity, trust, and hope for the future of open spaces in Yellowstones northern gateway.
