About Atlantic Sea Farms

Atlantic Sea Farms is a mission-driven, woman-run, regenerative seaweed farming company leading the development of an entirely new industry in the United States. With the Gulf of Maine warming faster than 98% of oceans in the world, we are working with fishermen to diversify their incomes in the face of climate change as their fisheries become increasingly volatile and vulnerable in the face of rapid warming. We are vertically integrated to the extreme in that we produce kelp seeds from scratch, give them to our partner farmers for free and turn their harvested kelp into value added food products and ingredient inputs. We provide technical assistance to farmers putting more than $1M in the pockets of Maine, Rhode Island, and Alaskan fisherman during the 2024 harvest season. Kelp farming is not only a climate change adaptation strategy, but also a climate change mitigation strategy. Regeneratively farmed with no arable land, fresh water, or pesticides in the open ocean, kelp farming removes nitrogen and carbon from the water column and improves the environment where it grows. It is also one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet and provides essential vitamins and minerals to American consumers that arent present in other accessible foods. In 2018, only 30,000 lbs of kelp was grown in the entire US. Last year, Atlantic Sea Farms partner farmers grew over 1.3M lbs of kelp - which is more than 70% of all of the farmed kelp grown in America. To have fishermen leading the charge in the US in growing the most climate friendly food on the planet shows communities around the country that they, too, can determine their own destiny in the face of a rapidly changing world. We are a proud woman-run company - especially in the face of the fact that less than 1% of all C-Suite positions in the global seafood chain are held by women. Additionally, less than 2% of all venture funding went to women-run businesses last year. Atlantic Sea Farms is proving that we can grown a new industry in the US by putting people, planet, and consumers first - and that we can buck the negative trends currently present in our food and seafood systems. Atlantic Sea Farms has received national and international attention despite our still very small size including being awarded the Whole Foods Supplier of the Year award, The Alnoba Environmental Hero Award, the Specialty Food Association Business Leadership Award, the Governors Heritage Award, and other recognitions focused on our environmental and business leadership. We are proud to be building an entirely new industry and proving that good food can do good by leading the charge in this new, exciting industry.
